  • We are working with ARC and DOC to try and contain phytophtora taxon agathis which is killing off our kauri trees.  The latest news on this is that it is spread by mud and waterways so we need to keep to tracks and clean our footware.

  • Statistics have been used from the 2006 census data to make the assumptions that 35% of our people have no qualifications, 12% have level 3 and 4 qualifications (trade certificates), 10% have level 5 and 6 certificates and diplomas, 6% have bachelor degrees and 3% have higher degrees.  While this is above the Maori national average it is well below the average for New Zealanders.

  • We have strongly objected to an application by Coastal Resources for a permit to dump 50,000 m3 of marina dredgings (containing heavy metals) 25 kms off our east coast at 175o47'.00E and 36o13'.00S directly north of Cuvier Island.  The site would cover an area of 1500 m by 1500 m with an additional 1000 m of monitoring area included around the site making the total site area 3500 m by 3500 m.  This proposed new site is only 15 km away from an existing explosives dumping ground and close to the Navy testing site.  The permit is for 35 years with options to increase the volume being dumped. No alternative to dumping is being investigated by anyone as dumping is the cheapest and easiest solution.  You can help us by advising us any cultural significance this site has.

  • Our rohe moana.  We anticipated hearing back in March 2009 but this is still not settled so we are applying pressure to have this settled.

  • 4.00 p.m. Thursday, 15 May 2008:  We received a phone call from the Hon Steve Chadwick that the marine reserve will not be going ahead.
